Why measure first?
A listing usually gives only the living area (Wohnfläche). For your furniture, other things count: free wall length, ceiling height and the width of doors and stairwell. These numbers decide which furniture comes along, what you buy new and what you leave behind. So measure before the first box is packed.
What to note for each room
- Length and width in metres, and from that the area.
- Ceiling height, important for tall wardrobes.
- Position of doors, windows and radiators.
- Free wall length, for example for a sofa, bed or wardrobe.
- Width of the front door, room doors and stairwell. Large furniture has to be carried through these narrow points.
The kitchen needs special care
Many rented flats in Germany come without a fitted kitchen (Einbauküche). Note where water, drain and power points are, how long the walls for cabinets are, and where the fridge and washing machine can stand. This shows whether your old kitchen fits or a new one is needed. Template to fill in
| Room | Length × width (m) | Area (m²) | What must fit | Open question |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Living room | Sofa, shelving, TV unit | Wall length for the sofa? | ||
| Bedroom | Bed, wardrobe | Wardrobe height vs ceiling? | ||
| Child's room | Bed, desk, shelf | |||
| Kitchen | Cabinets or own kitchen, fridge, washing machine | Connections present? | ||
| Bathroom | Washing machine, cabinet | Washer connection in the bathroom? | ||
| Hallway and storage | Coats, shoes, cellar items | Cellar or attic included? |
Fill in the table once. The same figures later help you plan where each piece goes, what to order new and what never needs to appear on your inventory list.
In the moving planner you can enter the size of each room. That way we can see before the quote how much space your furniture will have in the new home.
